Guinness Dublin Walking Tour

Introduction

Dublin without Arthur Guinness would be a story only half told. From humble origins the Guinness empire would straddle a large part of the globe but always and forever the Home of the Black stuff is here, in Dublin where it first saw the light of day. The Vikings made their home here and are accredited with laying the foundations of Dublin but Guinness is arguably the soul of the city and the people its embodiment. The people of Dublin and beyond supped the staple supplement of creation: they nurtured it, caressed it and then sank it. Moderation in everything, everything in moderation as they say.

Today its name still carries a uniqueness that is recognizable as quintessentially Irish. To the ordinary Dubliner who might define it as ‘part of what we are’ it has over time taken on a different hue one might say. The scribes might remark that it is an essential in honing the creative spirit that signals out the Irish as being Irish. Others might add that it is purely the sign irrespective of one’s poison, alcoholic or non-alcoholic that is the creativity of the country and in particular Dublin that is renowned for its wit.

The connections are many and intertwined in the Guinness story was their ability to spot an opening and look to the future. Our city abounds with relics of the opulence and grandeur that came the way of the clan. For some within the family who took a different path, their story is equally compelling.

The business acumen that was fostered from an early age in the Guinness children would ultimately bring the Guinness name to world acclaim. Along with some of the other characters of Dublin who entertain us still when we reflect on the Dublin of Arthur Guinness, we will attempt to bring you the whole story…if that were possible. There is even a grudging admiration for it in Cork they say, the home of Murphy’s.

A Pint of Plain

Plain posturing and the quiet calm
It’s the language of the masses my man
Anticipation, elation are the perfect foil
For a pint of the Black Stuff I’d walk a mile.

My city though small on an island of greatness
Holds many dark secrets that must remain ageless
It’s a hallmark it’s an emblem it’s held in esteem
The monologue of many as I greedily suck the cream

The Arthurian connection it lingers it soothes
With fondness and simplicity it’s part of the news
A snug feeling a rendition a historical connection
The parish priest is passing it’s time for reflection

Dublin Coddle and Guinness go hand in hand
Are you going for a Roaster sure everything will be grand
Cobble stones and gas lamp lights that still adorn our streets
As old as our Celtic ancestry it strikes the right beat

The connoisseur of quality understands the task at hand
Quaffing the mixture to ensure it’s not bland
Devotees to a tradition that’s as old as King Brian
The introduction of 00 will improve over time
